Nintendo Sets November 5 Release for 'Ocarina of Time' Switch 2 Remake, Staying True to the 1998 Classic

During the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, Nintendo confirmed "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" will arrive on Switch 2 November 5, featuring new camera controls, a quest log, and the ability to play the ocarina by humming — alongside a newly revealed Zelda-themed Switch 2 console.

Nintendo Sets November 5 Release for 'Ocarina of Time' Switch 2 Remake, Staying True to the 1998 Classic

Hum a tune into the Switch 2's microphone, and the game will recognize which ocarina song you're playing — this is one of the most intriguing details revealed about the Switch 2 remake of "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." Longtime fans who've played the original for nearly thirty years probably still remember the rhythm of those button commands. Now Nintendo has swapped it out for something more intuitive, without touching the core skeleton of the game.

Nintendo saved the biggest announcement for last at today's Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Direct: the "Ocarina of Time" remake will launch on November 5. The title was first teased back in June for Switch 2, but with no gameplay footage or details on the scope of the remake, leaving players speculating all summer. Now the answer is clear: this is a remake faithful to the 1998 original's structure, not a ground-up reimagining like "Breath of the Wild."

Visuals Fully Overhauled, Gameplay Stays True to the Original

The gameplay footage showcased Kokiri Forest, Hyrule Field, and Hyrule Castle Town, with scene details noticeably richer than in the N64 or 3DS versions. Epona also made an appearance in the trailer — players can still ride her across the field during Adult Link's timeline. The combat system appears consistent with the original, with the Z-targeting system first introduced in 1998 kept fully intact. However, the quick-swap inventory controls seem to draw from recent Zelda titles, making equipment changes noticeably smoother.

The controls have also received modern adjustments, including new camera controls and a dedicated jump button, with voice acting added as a new feature this time around. Nintendo has also designed a quest log system that reminds players of their current progress and next objective from the menu — something veteran players familiar with the original's dungeon layouts may not need, but a significant guidance boost for newer players who've only experienced recent Zelda entries.

The ocarina remains a core narrative device in the game. Players can still perform songs using button commands, but if you already remember the melodies, you can also complete the performance by humming directly into the Switch 2.

Zelda-Themed Console Also Revealed

As previously rumored, Nintendo also unveiled a Legend of Zelda-themed Switch 2 console at the Direct, with the Joy-Con controllers, main unit, and dock all featuring exclusive designs.

The announcement lands right before the live-action Zelda movie hits theaters next year, bringing Link's original 3D adventure back into the spotlight. Today's Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct was one of two first-party Nintendo presentations this week, with a general Nintendo Direct set to air at the same time tomorrow.
