That context added a heavier undertone to what had originally seemed like a triumphant closer when the tour launched in Oakland, California back in June. NME's review noted the show felt "darker and more pointed" as a result.
Twenty thousand fans packed The O2, and Grande's voice filled every corner of it. NME singled out a jaw-dropping vocal run during "Break Free," her collaboration with DJ-producer Zedd—so masterfully executed it even smoothed over the song's grammatically awkward line, "Now that I've become who I really are." The show was framed as a showcase of her vocal chops, coming from an artist with eight studio albums under her belt and an Oscar nomination for "Wicked."
