What to know | Autumn outdoor shoes: matching HOKA, MERRELL and SCARPA to different routes

The key details: Mid-cut, low-cut, insulated and approach shoes serve different purposes. Compare the exact model, fit and intended ground conditions alongside outsole and waterproofing specifications.

What to know | Autumn outdoor shoes: matching HOKA, MERRELL and SCARPA to different routes

If you want to increase your outdoor itinerary in autumn, you can first choose shoes based on the route requirements. Recently, Korean outdoor products have appeared in different directions such as HOKA Kaha 3, MERRELL Moab 3, Salomon Shelter and SCARPA Mojito. They all seem to have outdoor vocabulary, but the actual shaft height, materials and usage focus are different.

Kaha 3, first identify the mid-cut and low-cut versions

HOKAKaha 3 GORE-TEX mid-cut version, adopts GORE-TEX Invisible Fit and Vibram Megagrip outsole, and has a toe protection structure. The series also has low-top styles, so you need to confirm the specific model when looking at the name. You cannot directly apply the specifications of a certain version to the entire series.

A higher shaft will change the coverage and movement around the ankle, and the thickness of the sole will affect the feeling when you land. These characteristics provide a guide for comparison, but do not mean that a mid-cut or thick sole will be suitable for everyone's gait, load, and all trails.

Moab 3, material combination and waterproof version to be separated

MERRELL Moab 3 has attracted attention for its configurations such as leather, mesh, cushioning and Vibram soles. The series includes different waterproof versions. If the shopping page only says Moab 3, you should read down the complete product name and material description. It is not advisable to assume that every pair uses the same waterproof membrane.

The mesh area, shoelace fixing method and toe head space will also affect the long-term wearing experience. You can try on the socks you usually use for walking, confirm the position of the toes, heels and when going downhill, and then put the appearance and color into the final comparison.

Warm shoes and approach shoes to handle different situations

Salomon Shelter CSWP has a warm and protective orientation, making it suitable to be distinguished from general breathable hiking shoes. CSWP is not another way of writing GORE-TEX. Winter appearance and outsole configuration do not mean that the ice surface is not slippery. It still depends on the ground, weather and actual use conditions.

Arc’teryx Konseal has a design language of an approach shoe, making fit, forefoot control and sole contact the focus. Approach shoes is not just about changing the name of hiking shoes. When choosing, you should confirm the specific version and whether your itinerary really requires such a structure.

Mojito, giving urban and outdoor styles different entrances

SCARPA Mojito’s suede surface, shoelaces extending to the front and Vibram outsole make it recognizable in urban wear. It provides another shoe choice. Just because the brand has a mountaineering background, this pair of shoes cannot be regarded as equipment that can handle all technical terrain.

If the trip is mainly about commuting, traveling and easier walking routes, you can first compare the shoe weight, shoelace adjustment and the relationship between the trouser cuffs; if you plan to take a longer or more rugged route, you should first clarify your equipment needs and then go back to choose the appearance.

After reading the specifications, how do you make the final choice?

First list the surface you will walk on, the expected load and the weather, and then compare the shaft height, breathability, waterproofing and fit. It will be more reliable than choosing based on the brand's reputation alone. The sole material is part of the information and does not guarantee safety on all slippery surfaces.

A pair of outdoor shoes that suits you should be established in real use situations. Only by looking at urban style, warmth needs and technical routes separately can you know whether you need daily shoes, hiking shoes, or another piece of equipment with a more specific purpose.
