Bloc Party's New Track "Pigwig" Hides a Peter Rabbit-Style Nickname and a Summer That Can't Be Reclaimed

The title "Pigwig" sounds like it belongs to a children's book character, but it's actually an inside code from a relationship that only two people understood. Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke revealed that Pigwig was the nickname of a former partner, taken from Pigling Bland's love interest in Beatrix Potter's stories. "It was a meaningful in-joke between us at the time," he shared.

The track marks the fourth single released from Bloc Party's seventh studio album "Anatomy Of A Brief Romance," following "Coming On Strong," "Love Bombs," and "Now We Can't Be Friends." The album is set to drop September 11th via Contagious Music, featuring 14 tracks. Okereke describes the album's structure as memoir-like, calling it the most personal batch of songs he's ever written.

Okereke says "Pigwig" captures "that moment of realizing you've been hit by this massive love, almost against your own will." He went on to explain that the song recalls a seaside getaway from the sweetest period of the relationship: "Looking back, it's probably the sweetest song on the album." The lyrics read "We drove your car down to the sea / I kept eating snacks the whole way there," while also touching on his partner's fascination with decaying coastlines—"He likes to see the concrete and the grey / He seems happiest amongst the ruin / He fell in love with decay itself."

This juxtaposition of romance and decay echoes the tone running through the whole album. In an interview with NME last year, Okereke revealed that the record started with "disco heartbreak" as its guiding concept. "That was the general direction, but it turned into something else—we were only six songs in at the time, so it could still shift entirely." He added bluntly: "It's really an album about heartbreak, that's as much as I can say for now."

The album was produced by legendary producer Trevor Horn, known for his work with Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, among others. Okereke described the experience of working with Horn: "He's made some of my favorite records ever, so hearing how he thinks was fascinating. He's been making records for over 50 years—it feels like he's seen every trick in the book, knows everyone, and has a story about literally everyone."

The official music video for "Pigwig," directed and designed by Laura Perrett, features a 2000s camcorder aesthetic capturing the band performing live.

"Anatomy Of A Brief Romance" marks Bloc Party's latest release since 2022's "Alpha Games." The band picked up the Outstanding Song Collection award at last year's Ivor Novello Awards for their impressive body of work, and that same summer made their debut in the "icons" slot at Reading & Leeds Festival performing classic tracks. Coming up, the band will add extra UK record store tour dates and later co-headline a UK and European tour with Interpol, following previous stints opening for Muse on select North American dates.
