Jazz's No. 2 Pick Speaks His Mind: "You Tanked to Get Me" — Right as NBA Pushes to Ban Tanking

19-year-old No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson said on ESPN that the Utah Jazz tanked in past seasons specifically to land a player like him — sparking heated debate just as the league pushes forward with lottery reform.

Jazz's No. 2 Pick Speaks His Mind: "You Tanked to Get Me" — Right as NBA Pushes to Ban Tanking

"It's kind of a dream come true. The team told me they'd been tanking the past few years just to get a player like me." Those words came from Darryn Peterson, who just turned 19 — with none of the usual diplomatic hedging you'd expect from a young rookie.

At this year's NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz — who finished with the worst record in the Western Conference last season — held the No. 2 pick and used it on Kansas standout Peterson. Averaging 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in his freshman season, the rising star set a new Kansas single-season scoring record for freshmen and earned spots on both the All-America Second Team and the All-Freshman Team, making him the centerpiece of the franchise's rebuild.

After joining the Jazz, Peterson sat down for an interview on ESPN's *Chiney Today*, hosted by WNBA legend Chiney Ogwumike. When asked how it felt to join a rebuilding team that views him as its future cornerstone, he dropped the line above — then added, "I know it's not going to be easy, but I think I'm ready for it. Or, well, I'll work to be ready for it."

The comment stirred plenty of discussion among fans. Some said, "Wow, you can just say that out loud?" while others chalked it up to youthful bluntness: "Kids will be kids — a bit too outspoken."

The League Wants to End Tanking — But the Rookie Already Called It Out

Peterson's candor lands right in the middle of a problem the NBA is already trying to solve. For years, teams at the bottom of the standings have been accused of deliberately "tanking" to boost their lottery odds and land top talent. Commissioner Adam Silver has recently been working to change that incentive structure. According to reporter Shams Charania, the NBA has presented all 30 team general managers with a reform proposal known as the "3-2-1 lottery system."

The proposal would expand the lottery field from 14 teams to 16, and for the first time introduce a "penalty zone" — the three worst teams in the league would actually see their odds of landing the No. 1 pick decrease. Teams just outside that bottom tier would get better odds instead (3 balls versus 2), and even play-in teams would be given lottery balls of their own.

On one side, the league is trying to close the loophole that rewards tanking. On the other, a freshly drafted No. 2 pick just openly confirmed exactly what a team had been doing for years to get him. The timing of these two developments happening side by side makes Peterson's brutally honest remark land even harder.
