Debby Chen's Residential Design: Letting Natural Light and Curves Speak First

Debby Chen, founder of DJ PLUS Design, views light and curves as a way of understanding residential spaces. Her projects, '大隱水岸' and '馭光和居,' address expansive views and narrow, elongated floor plans respectively, presenting different spatial solutions.

The waterfront residence connects the public area to the outdoor scenery, while glass preserves the independence of the study. The vertical residence, on the other hand, first considers each floor's natural light conditions before arranging spaces for family activities, rest, and shared use. Curves throughout help harmonize the transitions between different areas.

These cases suggest that residential design can begin by asking where light enters and how people move throughout the day, before discussing desired style. Even without major layout changes, repositioning furniture and adjusting local lighting can make the way a space is used clearer.
