What to know | Disney Imagination plans a spring 2029 debut from Tokyo’s Odaiba

Japan’s first Disney cruise ship is officially named Disney Imagination and is planned to use the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal in Odaiba, Tokyo as its departure and return port. Oriental Paradise and Oriental Paradise Cruises announced that they are expected to enter operation in the second half of the 2028 fiscal year, that is, in the spring of 2029. It is still a travel plan under preparation and cannot be considered as having sailed or that tickets can be purchased now.

Why do 2028 and the spring of 2029 appear at the same time?

The fiscal year of a Japanese company is not necessarily the same as the calendar year from January to December. The "second half of 2028" announced this time corresponds to bookings for the spring of 2029. Therefore, when arranging travel, you should judge based on clear calendar years and actual sailing announcements to avoid booking a trip for the wrong year when you only see 2028.

The name of the ship is centered on imagination, and the stern of the ship is expected to show Ariel and Sebastian from "The Little Mermaid" drawing the name of the ship together. Compared to just putting the characters into indoor facilities, this configuration also makes the appearance of the ship become part of the story; however, the visual and facility content currently announced should still be understood as planning information.

What are the entertainment and dining arrangements on board?

The entertainment program includes a theater with over 1,300 seats, outdoor deck stage character performances, and activities in different areas of the ship. Passengers will also have the opportunity to interact with Disney characters wearing exclusive cruise ship costumes. For family travel, indoor performances, deck activities and character meetings are different formats. Age, reservation and participation conditions should be considered in the future.

In terms of catering, three main restaurants are planned, with themes and menus that can change according to the schedule; there are a total of about 30 on-board cafes, bars and other dining facilities, as well as shops selling cruise exclusive products. The number of these facilities does not mean that all consumption is included in the fare. The specific included items still need to wait for the official fare and plan instructions.

Starting from Odaiba, parent-child and adult spaces are planned separately.

There will be a dedicated area for children's activities on board, as well as an adult-only area with a quieter atmosphere. This means that the product is not just for families with children; different travel groups can be compared in terms of activity arrangements, catering and space usage. However, the actual usage rules for child care ages and adult areas cannot yet be finalized on their own.

Tokyo International Cruise Terminal is located in Odaiba, which is a different location from Tokyo Disney Resort in Maihama. If you plan to schedule a land park and a cruise on the same trip in the future, you should check the transportation, luggage and check-in time separately, and do not treat the park tickets and the cruise itinerary as a package that automatically connects.

The best thing to do now is to track ship construction, voyages, fares and launch schedules, rather than first applying Disney cruise conditions in other countries. Disney Imagination has confirmed the name and scheduled home port. The next step that will be truly useful to passengers is when the operator will announce the actual flights that can be booked.
