Once you slip into boots, it's easy to assume no one will ever see your toes again — but nail artist Katie Masters (founder of Nail Thoughts) sees it differently. "You're probably going to be wearing closed-toe shoes, so why not use that as an excuse to try a new color?" she says. Nail artist Tom Bachik (Après Nail brand ambassador, who works between Los Angeles, New York, and Paris) puts it even more bluntly: "A pedicure is kind of like a tattoo — you can hide it under layers of clothing, or you can show it off whenever you want." In other words, this is the one season where you can experiment freely without an audience.
Denim blue-gray is the most overlooked neutral of the bunch. Miami-based nail artist Leslie Ayala (founder of Nail Witch Studios) describes it this way: "This shade reads as a neutral on toes, but it also nods to the denim pieces we all reach for more in fall — it's got that cool, overcast autumn palette without actually being gray." She calls out Lights Lacquer's Mr. Darcy ($13) as a deep, indigo-washed blue that pairs well with silver accents or cool-toned prints; for something lighter but equally moody, try Londontown's Secret to Happiness ($16).
Merlot red is the song that gets replayed every single fall. Barcelona-based nail artist Andrea Forero (a DND Gel spokesperson) says: "Deep cherry and merlot tones are great for anyone who wants something classic with a touch of moodiness — it's a rich, sophisticated shade that flatters skin tone without stealing the show." Bachik has also noticed red trending upward in 2026, and expects it to carry through winter — "It's the color of sex appeal, confidence, and power." For a classic option, try China Glaze's Moonlit Merlot ($9); for something deeper and more Bordeaux, go for Deborah Lippmann's Single Ladies ($22) or Chanel Le Vernis 155 Rouge Noir ($32).
Caramel brown is like bottling up every fall dessert into one nail polish. Nail artist Beth Fink (a Kleo Kolor spokesperson) says: "From warm caramel to mocha to deep chocolate, brown looks surprisingly polished on toes." New York-based nail artist Tak Okamura recommends caramel as a perfect transition color between summer and fall: "This sun-kissed brown amber tone lets you ease from summer into fall without needing to switch colors entirely."
