Three Weeks After His World Cup Winner, Ferran Torres Joins PSG

The Spanish forward who scored the extra-time winner in the World Cup final has turned around and signed for reigning Champions League holders PSG for roughly €50 million, reuniting in the dressing room with national team mentor Luis Enrique.

Three Weeks After His World Cup Winner, Ferran Torres Joins PSG

The final whistle had barely blown before the bags were packed for Paris. Ferran Torres netted the extra-time winner that handed Spain the World Cup, and just a few weeks later, the 26-year-old forward has officially completed his transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain, in a deal worth around €50 million (roughly $57.84 million).

The most interesting part of this deal isn't the fee—it's the personnel. The coach Torres now has to answer to in Paris is none other than Luis Enrique, the same man who managed him with the Spanish national team—a familiar dressing-room voice, just relocated to a new city. For PSG, this is a straightforward gap-fill: with Gonçalo Ramos off to AC Milan and Randal Kolo Muani making his move to Juventus permanent, there was a hole up front waiting to be plugged. Torres has mostly played as a central striker over the past two seasons, but he can also operate out wide, making him a flexible tactical option.

The reason behind the move is buried in the contract details: Torres still had a year left on his Barcelona deal, and it was he who asked to leave. Last season he made 49 appearances and scored 21 goals, and during his time at Camp Nou he collected seven trophies, including three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups—hardly the résumé of someone leaving on the bench. The former Manchester City man's CV was already substantial, and now with a World Cup winner's medal added on top, it's no surprise his transfer value has climbed accordingly.

The timing is really the most dramatic part of the whole story: barely any time after the final whistle against Argentina, he was already on Paris's squad list for the new season, set to campaign with the reigning Champions League holders. The source material doesn't specify an official effective date or shirt number, so those details are pending confirmation from the official transfer announcement.
