Turning Humans Into Plants in an Oxygen-Starved Apocalypse: "Fool Night" Hits Netflix in November

Turn a terminally ill patient into an oxygen-producing plant in exchange for a survival stipend — that's the chilling premise at the heart of "Fool Night," and the starting point for the entire series. Bandai Namco Filmworks has released a new trailer confirming that the anime adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda's manga will premiere globally on Netflix on November 26, 2026.

The original manga was serialized in Shogakukan's "Big Comic Spirits" and has received critical acclaim. The story is set in a future where oxygen levels keep dropping and sunlight is a distant memory. Humanity has developed a procedure called "transfloration," which converts terminally ill patients into oxygen-producing plants — in exchange, their families receive a financial stipend. The anime is co-produced by Sunrise and Shaft, directed by Hiroshi Hachiya.

The protagonist, Toshiro Kamiya, is an impoverished young man who undergoes the transfloration procedure, voiced by Koki Uchiyama. After the surgery, he's unexpectedly drawn into investigating a series of murders linked to the "plantification" process, giving the story a strong detective-mystery edge. The trailer also revealed newly cast voice actors, including Fairouz Ai as Yumiko Horai, Yuka Nukui as Ayaka Amano, Ayane Sakura as Ayako Amano, and Kiyomitsu Mizuuchi as Jin Hiratoko.

The 60-second trailer builds a cold, oppressive atmosphere through its cinematography, showcasing the series' body horror worldview and noir-tinged visual design. With almost no dialogue, it lets the imagery alone conjure this sunless world.

So far, only the premiere date and cast list have been confirmed — episode count and release schedule have yet to be announced.
