Ryan Murphy Cracks Open the Door to a 'Glee' Revival: "Too Many Young People Are Watching It"

A decade after *Glee* wrapped, Ryan Murphy told reporters at his new project's premiere that the musical dramedy has unexpectedly found a young new audience — and admitted he's now seriously entertaining the idea of bringing it back in some form.

This wasn't Ryan Murphy slipping a mention into a press release for his latest show — it was him volunteering the answer the moment *Glee* came up. Speaking to *People* at the New York premiere of *The Shards*, he brought up the musical dramedy that's been off the air for ten years now, with a hint of genuine surprise in his voice: "It's so funny, it's had a resurgence. There's so many young people watching it now."

He didn't announce a revival — the word he used was "considering," the kind of thing you're still turning over in your own head. "My nostalgia and love for that show is so strong that I think, 'Maybe people would want to see it again in some new form.'" That phrase — "some new form" — leaves a lot of room open. It could be a series. It could be something else entirely.

*Glee*, created by Murphy alongside Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, premiered in 2009 and followed the glee club New Directions at the fictional William McKinley High School, blending musical numbers with storylines about sexuality, race, bullying, and love across six seasons. The core cast included Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Naya Rivera, and Kevin McHale, alongside a wildly stacked guest list — Britney Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Hudson all made appearances. In 2010, the show's cover songs propelled the *Glee* cast past The Beatles for the most entries on the Billboard Hot 100, a record that still stands for a non-solo act. Their cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" alone introduced the 1981 classic to an entirely new generation.

Murphy's claim that "young people are watching" isn't just a guess. Last year, Chappell Roan got swarmed by Gleeks after joking that a *Glee* Christmas episode was "the worst episode of television ever made" — she later issued a public apology and even reenacted the show's iconic slushie-to-the-face moment. The fact that a pop star still riding high in 2026 would go to the trouble of recreating a decade-plus-old meme is, in its own way, proof that Murphy isn't exaggerating.

Murphy made these comments while promoting *The Shards*, his new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's 2023 novel about a serial killer targeting students at an elite private high school. The series premieres on FX and Hulu in the U.S. on August 5, followed by a Disney+ launch in the U.K. on August 6. As for whether *Glee* actually comes back — and in what form — for now it exists only as an idea in Murphy's head, with no concrete plans or timeline attached.
