She played a character who couldn't die no matter how much damage she took, and one line—"Save the cheerleader, save the world"—burned her face into the world's memory. But real life didn't hand Hayden Panettiere the same script. The American actress has reportedly died at 36.

Her agent has confirmed the news to ABC News, and her family has released a statement asking for privacy. The official cause of death has not yet been announced.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Hayden," her agent said in a statement, describing her as "an incredible light"—a force of life that brought love and joy to those around her and to millions of viewers on screen. Hayden's father has asked the public to respect the family's privacy as they take time to grieve this loss.

Hayden broke into showbiz at age 5, appearing in early soap operas like One Life to Live and Guiding Light, plus guest spots on Ally McBeal and Malcolm in the Middle. She caught attention in 2000 for the film Remember the Titans, but it was her lead role in NBC's Heroes starting in 2006 that made her a global name—playing Claire Bennet, a high school cheerleader with near-indestructible self-healing powers, and cementing her as one of the era's most recognizable young stars.

Her film credits also include Ice Princess and Bring It On: All or Nothing, as well as Kirby Reed in Scream 4. The character became a fan favorite, and Hayden reprised the role in 2023's Scream VI.

Off-Screen, She Had No Healing Powers

Hayden had previously spoken openly about her years-long struggle with alcohol and substance addiction, and had sought treatment. After giving birth to her daughter Kaya, she battled postpartum depression, which led to a decision to have her daughter primarily raised by her father, former boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

Another devastating blow came in 2023 when her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died of heart disease at just 28. Speaking about his death at the time, Hayden said that facing such a huge tragedy makes you rethink what truly matters, "and stop letting the small stuff get to you."

Those words are now being revisited. The official cause of death has not yet been released.
