17 Straight Wins: Islam Makhachev Makes UFC History With a Body Triangle in Round Five

UFC 330 wrapped up in Philadelphia with Islam Makhachev defeating Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision, extending his win streak to 17 and officially surpassing Anderson Silva's 13-year-old record.

17 Straight Wins: Islam Makhachev Makes UFC History With a Body Triangle in Round Five

Ninety seconds into the fifth round, Islam Makhachev locked up a low single-leg takedown on Ian Machado Garry, dragging his opponent back to the mat and clamping down a body triangle from the back that held until the final bell. It wasn't a flashy finish, but it's how he made UFC history — a decision win earned through attrition and control.

UFC 330 took place at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, headlined by Makhachev's first defense of his welterweight title against the taller Irish fighter Garry. After five rounds, the three judges scored it 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47, handing Makhachev the unanimous decision and his 17th consecutive win.

The fight was far from one-sided. Garry brought serious pressure at range, and round three was arguably his best stretch of the night — stuffing takedowns and firing back with leg kicks and head-hunting combinations. But the head kick Makhachev landed in round two had already set the tone, rocking his opponent before he racked up seven takedowns to build his advantage. Even with some of those takedowns defended, the pace stayed firmly in his hands.

With this win, the 34-year-old Makhachev officially surpassed middleweight legend Anderson Silva's 16-fight win streak, a record that had stood for 13 years. It also marked his first successful title defense since capturing the welterweight belt at UFC 322.

The card had plenty of other highlights: strawweight women's champion Mackenzie Dern defended her title with a unanimous decision over Gillian Robertson; middleweight Dustin Stoltzfus pulled off a stunning upset as a 5-to-1 underdog, submitting Mansur Abdul-Malik with a rear-naked choke in round two; flyweight Charles Johnson finished Eduardo Chapolin with the rare "Scottish Twister," a submission already being called one of the best of the year; and Philadelphia native Jeremiah Wells choked out Myktybek Orolbai with a Ninja choke in round three, pulling off one of the biggest comeback wins in UFC history.
