Jeff Teague Just Roasted Monta Ellis, Then Turned Around and Said Lillard Could've Won Titles in Curry's Place Too

Jeff Teague pushed back on Monta Ellis's "swap and still win it all" theory on his podcast, only to drop his own version claiming "swap Lillard in and the results would be about the same" — and American media were quick to point out he'd completely overlooked Stephen Curry's role as the engine of it all.

Jeff Teague Just Roasted Monta Ellis, Then Turned Around and Said Lillard Could've Won Titles in Curry's Place Too

Call out someone else's flawed logic, then immediately say something even harder to defend — that's basically the most awkward part of Jeff Teague's latest podcast appearance.

It all started with former Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis. He recently claimed that if you swapped him in for Stephen Curry back in the day, the Warriors would have reached the same championship heights regardless. The take quickly got screenshotted and passed around by fans, and eventually made its way to Jeff Teague.

Teague addressed it directly on his own podcast, first drawing a clear line: "Damian Lillard has never been better than Stephen Curry." Sounded like he was setting the record straight against Ellis — until his very next sentence undercut the whole point. "But if you took Steph off this team and put Dame on it, I think it's fine, I think they probably win about the same amount of games, could very possibly get the same results."

That statement basically just repackaged Ellis's exact logic under a different name. Curry and Lillard get compared constantly by fans, and sure, they share some traits — both can pull up from anywhere on the floor with absurd efficiency. But that's roughly where the similarities end. Curry's off-ball movement, court vision, and playmaking instincts put him on a completely different path than peak Lillard during his Portland Trail Blazers days.

The two teams have actually met in the playoffs before, most recently in the 2019 Western Conference Finals, when the Warriors swept the Blazers even without Kevin Durant. Lillard's career is Hall of Fame-worthy, no argument there — but Teague's "about the same results" claim is a tough sell to pretty much anyone who follows the league closely.

American media pushed back afterward, pointing to a specific moment Teague's argument conveniently skips over: the 2022 championship run. That Warriors team had real offensive limitations, and it was Curry's masterful blend of on-ball and off-ball scoring that patched over the gaps for the entire roster. The conclusion was blunt — swap Lillard's career for Curry's and he might've helped the Warriors grab one, maybe two titles, but claiming he'd replicate all four rings essentially erases Curry's irreplaceable role on every single one of those championship teams.

Ellis's original comments went viral after ESPN's report on August 9, and Teague's response surfaced the very next day, August 10, via a podcast clip — less than 24 hours apart, and somehow a perfect demonstration of the same logical trap being stepped on twice in a row.
