First Live Appearance in Six Months: Justin Timberlake Surprises Fans with Don Toliver in Miami

First Live Appearance in Six Months: Justin Timberlake Surprises Fans with Don Toliver in Miami

On the night of August 22, as Don Toliver's "Nitrous" tour stop at Miami's Kaseya Center wound down, an unexpected face joined him onstage—Justin Timberlake.

The two first performed Timberlake's 2003 hit "Rock Your Body" together, then transitioned into Toliver's own track "Body," which samples the chorus melody from "Rock Your Body." Interestingly, "Body" had already been performed earlier in the same show, but Toliver deliberately saved a second rendition for Timberlake's appearance—effectively bridging two generations' versions of the same song.

For Timberlake, this cameo carries real significance: it's his first public stage performance since paying tribute to longtime collaborator Pharrell Williams at the Recording Academy Honours Black Music Collective event in Los Angeles this past January. Going back even further, his last full-fledged performance was the closing show of his "Forget Tomorrow" world tour in Istanbul last July.

At the end of that tour, Timberlake revealed he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease, describing it as causing "relentless" mental and physical torment. At the time, he said: "When I was first diagnosed, I was really shocked, but at least I finally understood why I'd been having a lot of nerve pain, or just fatigue and feeling unwell, when I was on stage." He also mentioned considering cutting the tour short, but ultimately decided that "the joy that I get from performing may far outweigh some of the challenges I'm dealing with physically." Throughout the tour, he postponed shows due to bronchitis and laryngitis, and canceled others because of the flu and injuries.

This past March, police body camera footage from Timberlake's 2024 DUI arrest was made public after he settled a privacy lawsuit with local authorities. He had previously pleaded guilty to the DUI charge and was fined $500 (roughly NT$16,000), plus a $360 surcharge, and ordered to complete 25 hours of community service. His 2024 album "Everything I Thought I Was" received a three-star review from NME, which wrote that the record "proves he hasn't lost his vocal chops or his ability to lock into a groove, but it's not quite enough to make people forget the past controversies."

As for Don Toliver, he released his fifth studio album, "Hardstone Psycho"—wait, actually "Octane"—this past January. His "Nitrous" tour will continue running through the end of the year, with a UK stop scheduled for November.
