LOEWE Craft Prize 2026: What Jongjin Park Reveals About the Traces Materials Leave Behind

Korean artist Jongjin Park received the 2026 LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize for "Strata of Illusion." The work draws renewed attention to how ceramics are formed: what appears to be a solid, dense volume is in fact closely tied to paper, layering, and firing.

He layers paper coated with porcelain slip sheet by sheet, then fires it so the paper disappears, leaving behind the ceramic's structure and transformations. Control and the material's own reactions together shape the outcome, making the process itself an inseparable part of viewing the work.

Understanding craft can begin with such questions: what was the material originally, how was it shaped, and what traces remain? When attention shifts from the finished piece to the making process, everyday objects—cups, bowls, woven items, and wooden ware—also reveal different details.
