The day she got her masters back, the first thing Lucy Dacus did was add in a song she'd written on sticky notes and napkins ten years ago but never put on the album. Titled "No Thank You, I Love You, Goodbye," the track is the only new addition to the 10th-anniversary reissue of her 2016 debut, "No Burden."
In a lengthy post on social media, Dacus looked back on writing these songs at a time when she "didn't even call herself a musician yet" — bouncing between jobs at a movie theater box office, editing school yearbooks, and waiting tables, all to scrape together her $195 monthly share of rent for a room she split with two friends. The lyrics came to her during breaks between shifts, scrawled on sticky notes or napkins; she'd hum the melody on her walk home and work out the guitar part right before bed. "I figured no one would ever hear them, maybe 50 people tops — and those 50 people would know who they were about."
Listening back to the album now, she noticed that back then she "hadn't really found her voice yet," and her accent was more Southern than it is today. "It makes me wonder if I've been unconsciously smoothing it out, which is kind of a sad thought." She mentioned the whole thing was recorded in just one day, and that with more time, she might have found a more settled sound — "for better or worse."
