Luka Doncic Hit With Double Attack: Arrogance Claim Lacks Proof, But Foul-Baiting Title Has Numbers Behind It

Former player Al Harrington accused Luka Doncic of being too arrogant and driving LeBron James away, while Suns forward Dillon Brooks named him the league's top foul-baiter. The two accusations carry very different weight.

Luka Doncic Hit With Double Attack: Arrogance Claim Lacks Proof, But Foul-Baiting Title Has Numbers Behind It

In the same week, Luka Doncic took two heavy hits — but they didn't land with equal force. One was about attitude, the other about on-court tactics; one doesn't hold up to scrutiny, the other is backed by data.

Former NBA player Al Harrington didn't hold back on the "To the Baha" podcast. He argued that Luka Doncic should have seized the chance to play alongside LeBron James, studying the veteran legend's habits and details to become a more complete player. "But in my personal opinion, that didn't happen, and part of the reason, I think, is that he's too arrogant." Al Harrington even went further, speculating that LeBron James's move to the Philadelphia 76ers came because he'd lost patience with Luka Doncic and chose to escape the Lakers situation altogether.

The Big Three Got Along Fine Off the Court — The "Drove LeBron Away" Claim Doesn't Hold Up

The problem is, no other source has corroborated this claim. Last season, the "Big Three" of LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves got along well off the court and enjoyed playing together. LeBron James's departure looks more like a move toward an Eastern Conference team with stronger championship contention; on top of that, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka reportedly built the roster around Austin Reaves and pieces better suited to play alongside Luka Doncic, gradually pushing LeBron James into a secondary role — that's likely the real reason he grew disillusioned, not some "arrogance drove him out" narrative.

By contrast, Suns forward Dillon Brooks's accusation targets something concrete: actual playing style. Asked who in the league most loves to "bait fouls," he laid out his rankings without hesitation: "Top three foul-baiters: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic might be number one, and Trae Young."

League-Leading 10.1 Free Throw Attempts Per Game — Complaining to Refs Has Become His Trademark

This isn't just an offhand jab. In his first full season with the Lakers, Luka Doncic averaged 10.1 free throw attempts per game, the most in the league. Beyond frequently drawing fouls, he also often complains to referees about calls, sometimes delaying his return on defense while arguing — letting opponents score easily. That's part of why some defenders have mixed feelings about him. Some fans argue Shai Gilgeous-Alexander draws fouls driving into the paint just as often, but the fact that Dillon Brooks ranked Luka Doncic first likely reflects how deeply his ref-complaining habit has stuck in defenders' minds.

It's worth remembering that Luka Doncic was originally traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers for Anthony Davis precisely because the Mavericks lacked confidence in his conditioning. Last season, he showed up for the Lakers in the best shape of his career and delivered MVP-caliber performances, leading the team to a top-four seed in the West. This season, without LeBron James, the Lakers will need him to carry Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler forward — and the off-court controversy surrounding him is probably just getting started.
