Madonna Turns 68: London's Outernet Lights Up with Fan Messages
London's Outernet will launch a free interactive exhibition on August 16, projecting fan messages and photos for Madonna onto its 360-degree mega-screen to celebrate her 68th birthday—echoing her "Confessions II" party held at the same venue just last month.
A selfie, a few lines of text—by the next day, it could be up on the facade of that 360-degree megascreen building in the heart of London. This isn't a fan's fantasy; it's exactly what Outernet London is doing this weekend, turning messages written to Madonna into part of her 68th birthday celebration.
The immersive exhibition, titled "C'Mon Meet Me On The Dancefloor," opens free to the public at The Now Building starting August 16. Created in collaboration between Lookport Studio and the venue, it combines music with large-scale visual storytelling projected across The Now Building's wraparound screens. Visitors on-site can leave personal messages, with select photos and text chosen for the screen content. Multiple screening slots run throughout the day, with the schedule posted on Outernet's official website.
Lookport founder and creative director Alex Wolf said: "Madonna has written the language of modern pop culture through decades of relentless work, constant reinvention, and a refusal to stop. We wanted to create a way for audiences to genuinely express their own connection to her work—through personal stories, emotions, and messages." Outernet CEO Philip O'Ferrall described it as "an enormous honor" to pay tribute to her through this kind of interactive creative approach.
Choosing Outernet for this exhibition is no coincidence. Madonna just released her 15th studio album, "Confessions II," last month, produced by Stuart Price as a sequel to 2005's "Confessions On A Dance Floor." NME gave it four stars, calling it "her most vital album in over two decades." Around the album's release, she herself appeared at the same Outernet venue, spinning records alongside Price and daughter Lourdes at the "Club Confessions" release party, where she performed "Physical Attraction" live for the first time in 40 years. She recently also brought Kylie Minogue on stage to duet "Love Sensation" at Amsterdam's WorldPride, and the two subsequently released an "Afterhours" remix of the track.
As for the number 68 itself, Madonna herself seems to have something to say about it. In a 2019 interview with NME, she spoke about the unique pressures female artists face as they age: "Women have their own life journey, and at a certain age, people just expect them to disappear. I have no interest in that." That statement lands with particular force in the context of a birthday exhibition—one celebrating not an icon quietly fading away, but a performer still throwing parties at Outernet, still writing new lyrics.
The one exception seems to be next year's Glastonbury: despite hints she dropped earlier this year, festival organizer Emily Eavis confirmed this week that she won't be headlining next year's edition. Exhibition dates and time slots are subject to updates on Outernet's official website.
