Adam Driver Jokes He's Playing Magneto, Then Immediately Corrects Himself to Mister Sinister

At D23, Marvel unveiled the cast for the MCU's first standalone X-Men film, with Sadie Sink returning as Jean Grey and Adam Driver confirming his villain role via video appearance. The movie is set for a May 2028 release.

Adam Driver paused on screen for a beat, saying he was "super excited to be playing Magneto"—before the crowd could even react, he cut himself off: "No, wait, better role, Nathaniel Milbury." That's one of the aliases Mister Sinister has used in Marvel Comics. That on-the-spot correction summed up the nature of this casting announcement more accurately than any official press release could—even the actor himself was only confirming his character details in real time, live on stage.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the cast at Disney's D23 event in Anaheim, California on August 14. This marks the first standalone X-Men film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with a cast that includes Sadie Sink returning as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers (Cyclops), Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier (Professor X), Maya Boyd as Storm, and Inde Navarrette as Rogue. Adam Driver was the only cast member not present in person, appearing instead via video link.

Feige mentioned an interesting detail on stage: most of the cast had only met each other backstage for the first time shortly before the announcement. Driver added, "Kevin and I have been talking for years about me joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I think we've finally found the right movie."

Sadie Sink had actually already made her debut in the role—her mysterious character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day turns out to be the very Jean Grey confirmed today, putting an end to months of fan speculation. NME's four-star review of the film previously noted that Sink's character "creates an eerily compelling sense of villainy," with the audience getting to hear her perspective after the first act.

The film is directed by Jake Schreier, who previously helmed Thunderbolts*, with a screenplay by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, who also worked on Thunderbolts* and wrote Netflix's Beef. This is the first standalone X-Men film since Disney's 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox brought the X-Men characters into the MCU fold. It's set to release on May 5, 2028, following Avengers: Secret Wars—which Feige has called a "reset" point for the MCU—in December 2027.

Before that, the original Fox-era X-Men cast will make a brief return in Avengers: Doomsday: Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. The trailer for Doomsday dropped last month, with the film set to open on December 18.

In other words, audiences will first bid farewell to the X-Men faces they've known for two decades in Doomsday, only to have to memorize a whole new set of names the following May—with less than half a year in between.
