Mentor premieres in Kaohsiung: mistakes, responsibility and trust

Japanese film Mentor had its Taiwan premiere at the Kaohsiung Film Festival on October 24, attended by director Keisuke Yoshida and actors Hayato Isomura and Seiya Suezawa. With Go Ayano also in the cast, the film brings a past accident, adult choices and a mentor into one relationship.

The premiere is over, but its questions remain: how do people explain mistakes and judge another person’s kindness? Silence, gestures and changing relationships provide entry points without needing to know the ending.

A shared past, different adult lives

An accident separates childhood companions whose adult paths differ. One life turns towards competition and training, another towards continuing self-blame. Starting again becomes more than time passing: it concerns relationships still unresolved.

Watch how the past is discussed: explanation, avoidance or a changed subject may differ from behaviour. This is a way to read characters rather than judge someone in advance or treat one moment as a complete explanation of motive. Leave room for the film to reveal its clues.

Archery and apology as physical expression

Isomura plays archer Ryunosuke, whose training and bodily control form a visual thread. Suezawa’s character introduces another tension through apologetic gestures: practised precision on one side and familiar motions that may not earn trust on the other.

Compare pauses, reactions and whether words and bodies agree. The posture of an apology is not identical to responsibility, and sporting ability cannot replace repairing a relationship. These are questions embodied by characters rather than a quick formula for judging people.

A mentor changes the position of trust

Ayano’s mentor enters an existing relationship, adding kindness, dependence and influence as ways to watch. When someone appears ready to receive another person’s difficulty, audience expectations can shift too. How those expectations develop is worth following.

Before adding it to a viewing list, check subsequent official screening information and decide whether to read more plot detail. A premiere guest appearance does not mean every showing has a discussion, and festival screening dates do not establish a nationwide theatrical release.
