Fincher's English "Squid Game" Officially Dead, Cate Blanchett's Cameo Was All For Nothing

Last year's Squid Game Season 3 finale ended with the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) landing in Los Angeles, where the camera settled on a new recruiter—Cate Blanchett. Netflix never officially explained this scene, but fans connected the dots almost instantly: Blanchett had worked with David Fincher on 2008's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and reports had circulated as early as 2023 that Fincher was developing an English-language Squid Game, written by Utopia's Dennis Kelly, under the working title Heckler. That cameo read like a flare shot signaling the project was coming.

Now that flare has gone dark. According to The Playlist, citing sources close to Netflix, the Fincher-directed Squid Game is no longer moving forward as the company reassesses the direction of its flagship IP. Worth noting: Netflix never officially confirmed this project existed in the first place—every detail was built on reporting and speculation. Now even the vehicle for that speculation has disappeared.

Netflix reportedly still plans to roll out "localized versions" of Squid Game around the world, though no specifics have been announced. That statement reads less like a teaser for something new and more like a face-saving wrap-up.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke about the possibility of Fincher's involvement back in 2024, saying: "It would be such an honor to have different creators around the world bring their own versions of Squid Game into this universe." Blanchett herself said at the time she was "very open" to returning, but also admitted she knew nothing about Fincher's script—meaning her cameo was likely a one-sided Easter egg planted by Netflix rather than something the actress was actually looped in on.

NME gave the season a four-star review, writing that "through a breathtaking A-list cameo, it's revealed that Squid Game is far bigger than just South Korea—bringing the cycle of capitalist exploitation and suffering back into focus." As it stands now, that "bringing back into focus" moment has stalled at the cameo itself, with no follow-through in sight.

Fincher's next project is The Adventures Of Cliff Booth, with Brad Pitt reprising his Oscar-winning role from Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It hits theaters November 25 before streaming on Netflix December 23. As for the English-language Squid Game, there's currently no new timeline or replacement talent attached.
