Travis Barker Drops the News Almost Casually: Blink-182 Working on New Album

He was only supposed to be there to talk about his documentary, but Travis Barker let it slip near the end of the interview that Blink-182's new album is already in the works and expected to be done this year — all while he's also drumming and producing for Alkaline Trio's new record.

Travis Barker Drops the News Almost Casually: Blink-182 Working on New Album

Travis Barker sat down for The New York Times' Popcast, and the focus was supposed to be his upcoming documentary "Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear," set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on August 13. But when the host asked what else he had going on, Barker answered casually: "I'm starting a couple projects, like production stuff, and also working on the next Blink album."

Pressed on whether it would drop this year or have to wait until 2027, Barker was direct: "The Blink album is happening this year." No further details, no title, no release date — just that one confirmation. He also mentioned he's currently drumming and producing on Alkaline Trio's new album.

Blink-182's last album was 2023's "One More Time…," which also marked the first time Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Barker recorded together as the original trio in over a decade. They ran the "Missionary Impossible" tour last year, and more recently reissued their 2001 classic "Take Off Your Pants And Jacket" for its 20th anniversary with six bonus tracks. If Barker's comment holds true, this would be the second release since the trio reunited.

The documentary that actually brought Barker to the interview, "Louder Than Fear," is a far heavier project. Directed by Justin Krook and Michael Dwyer, it just had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival at Spring Studios in New York. The film revisits the near-fatal plane crash Barker survived in 2008 — he suffered third-degree burns over 65% of his body, spent three months in the hospital, and underwent 26 surgeries. He's previously spoken about the crippling anxiety and depression that followed, admitting he once offered a friend $1 million to kill him. The documentary traces how he found his way back from that.

Mark Hoppus offered some context to the band's journey in an NME interview last year, and his words hit differently next to Barker's low-key announcement. He recalled that back in the early '90s when the band first started, the biggest dream was simply selling out a small San Diego club called Soma, which held about 1,200 people: "When we sold that place out in 1995, I thought, well, I've made it. What else is there?" From there came the record deal, mainstream radio, and increasingly bigger venues. "Last year we played sold-out arenas in LA, Boston, New York, and I'm just sitting there thinking, this is the band we started in Tom's garage."

No further details about the new album have been revealed yet, including tracklist, release timing, or whether a tour will follow.
