Twenty One Pilots Recruit 10 Fans to Film on Hi-8, and It's Not the Stage They Want to Capture—It's Real Life

Ahead of their August 30 show at London's All Points East, Twenty One Pilots are calling on fans to submit Hi-8 and miniDV footage—not of the concert itself, but of everyday life leading up to it.

Twenty One Pilots Recruit 10 Fans to Film on Hi-8, and It's Not the Stage They Want to Capture—It's Real Life

They're not asking for stage footage—they're asking for closet footage. What Twenty One Pilots want fans to hand over this time is nothing like your typical tour behind-the-scenes clip. No phone-shot POV, no lighting effects. They want old-school formats like Hi-8 and miniDV, and they're deliberately steering clear of the concert itself, zeroing in instead on the raw, everyday texture of "what it means to be a fan."

The band's creative and content director Mark C. Eshleman explained on Instagram that this footage will be cut into an upcoming concert film, woven between certain songs to "add something unique." He wrote: "I'm looking for about 10 fans I'll send Hi-8 and miniDV cameras to, to capture a bit of their fan life and their journey to the show." The vibe is meant to lean vlog-style, but he emphasized talking isn't the point. "What I care more about is capturing what it feels like to be a fan. You could film your own artwork, a bedroom decked out as a themed room, or an outfit you're putting together for the show." Submissions closed on August 15, and the cameras—along with the footage shot on them—will be collected by the production team once fans arrive at the festival.

The show in question is Twenty One Pilots' set at All Points East in London's Victoria Park, happening Sunday, August 30—their only UK performance this year. They'll share the bill with acts including Wunderhorse and Nova Twins.

Earlier this year, the band dropped their concert film *More Than We Ever Imagined*, documenting a Mexico City stop on "The Clancy World Tour" that played to 65,000 fans, with Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun narrating the journey throughout. Before that, they headlined Madrid's Mad Cool festival in July, in a performance NME described as "one that anyone could appreciate." Most recently, they carried their European tour momentum to Hungary's Sziget Festival in Budapest. According to NME reporter Rhian Daly, that show stuck to the band's signature theatrical style, with the stage loaded with pyrotechnics and effects, capped off by a pre-recorded video appearance from The White Stripes' Jack White on the big screen, saying "I give Tyler and Josh permission to do this," before the whole crowd broke into a singalong of "Seven Nation Army."

Pairing old-school video formats with fans' everyday moments stands in stark contrast to the band's recent high-production stage shows—on one hand, pyrotechnics and celebrity cameos; on the other, fans handing over miniDV footage of their own bedrooms. As for exactly how this footage will be cut into the final film, or when it'll be released, NME's report offered no further timeline.
