Inside Usher's Atlanta Home, a 1956 Segregation-Era Photo Greets You at the Door

Usher opens up his home to Architectural Digest, showcasing a collection spanning Rashid Johnson, Damien Hirst, and George Condo—but what actually stops you in your tracks is a vintage Gordon Parks photograph hanging in the entryway.

Inside Usher's Atlanta Home, a 1956 Segregation-Era Photo Greets You at the Door

Step into Usher's Atlanta home, and the first thing you see isn't some blockbuster piece by a contemporary artist—it's a black-and-white photograph: Gordon Parks' 1956 image of a Black mother holding her child's hand outside the "colored entrance" of a department store in Mobile, Alabama. The photo is deliberately positioned right at the front door, and Usher told Architectural Digest that the placement itself is a statement—both a recontextualization and a reminder of the past.

Nicole Fuller, who worked on the house's design and is a friend and longtime collaborator of Usher's, says this photograph was actually where the entire space's design began. "Whether it's the color palette, the mood, the atmosphere, or the texture," everything extends from this image. In other words, the visual tone of this home wasn't built by adding art to an existing interior design—it was the reverse. The photo set the tone first.

Walk further into the house, and the names on the walls and scattered throughout the courtyard read like a who's-who: Rashid Johnson, Sterling Ruby, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, George Condo, Yoshitomo Nara, Daniel Arsham, Anthony James, Fabiola Jean-Louis, Jammie Holmes, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, plus a piece by R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe. This lineup would hold its own in any gallery, but Usher's collection clearly isn't about flexing a wall-to-wall blue-chip name list—every single piece has found its own place within the space.

The most personal touches are a handful of custom portraits made just for him. Both Julian Schnabel and Lauren Halsey have painted portraits of Usher—Halsey's piece sets his head within a grid composed of multiple faces. George Condo, meanwhile, painted a double portrait of Usher and his wife Jennifer Goicoechea Raymond, making it one of the few pieces in the collection that directly addresses their marriage.

This latest Architectural Digest spread isn't so much showcasing an art collection as it is demonstrating a philosophy of living: decide where one photograph belongs first, then let the entire house follow its lead. No details on piece dimensions, acquisition dates, or pricing were provided.
