"Let me just cut to the chase: I'm retiring." That's the opening line of Warren Spector's LinkedIn post—no buildup, no sentimental flourishes. But in the very next breath, he second-guesses himself: "At least I think I am. I've changed my mind before, but this time I'm pretty sure."
Posted on the evening of August 17, this announcement marks the exit of the 70-year-old game industry veteran. Spector is the creator of Deus Ex, the 2000 action RPG he directed and produced himself, laying the groundwork for the series' world-building that followed. Before that, he had worked on six Ultima titles and three Wing Commander games, and served as creative consultant on Underworld Ascendant. He currently holds the position of Studio Director at OtherSide Entertainment, a role he's held since joining in 2016.
In the post, Spector mentions he's about a month away from entering his 44th year in the industry, saying he "feels like I've done what I set out to do." He cites both his age and "personal matters"—an unspecified health condition—as factors in this decision. But what gives the post its real weight is the confession that follows: "I have mixed feelings about this. Honestly, there are still three games I really wanted to make—one big, one small, and one I don't even know how to approach, which honestly scares me a little."
