A Live Orchestra Will Accompany "Wicked" Screenings in Newly Announced Concert Tour

A Live Orchestra Will Accompany "Wicked" Screenings in Newly Announced Concert Tour

On screen, Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba and Ariana Grande's Glinda light up the frame, while a full live orchestra plays below—this is the format of the "Wicked" film series' upcoming tour next year. Jon M. Chu's two films, "Wicked" and "Wicked: For Good," will screen in HD projection while the orchestra performs the entire score live, including songs written by Stephen Schwartz and the score he co-composed with John Powell.

The project is presented by Universal Film and Universal Destinations & Experiences, produced by Justin Hurwitz's Hurwitz Concerts, which has toured "La La Land in Concert" and "Whiplash in Concert" since 2023. Hurwitz said: "I love this live-to-film format, and I think the 'Wicked' films are especially suited to it. It's an honor for me to help bring Stephen Schwartz's musical theater masterpiece and John Powell's brilliant film score to concert halls around the world."

Schwartz also responded in a statement—as reported by Deadline—saying: "Every time I see a live performance of a film score, I feel it's a wonderful experience, so I'm delighted that the 'Wicked' films are now becoming a film concert, especially one produced by Oscar winner Justin Hurwitz and his excellent team."

Currently announced dates include a San Francisco preview on January 16, the New York Radio City premiere and Chicago show on January 30, followed by Mexico City (March 6), Guadalajara (April 17), Monterrey (April 24), Toronto (May 29), Montreal (July 17), and Vancouver (July 24). More dates and cities have yet to be announced.

"Wicked: For Good" previously received a three-star review from NME, with critic Nick Levine writing: "The truly stunning climactic moment is Elphaba and Glinda's duet of 'For Good,' the sweeping musical theater anthem that sums up their entire relationship. 'Wicked: For Good' doesn't quite 'defy gravity' the way its predecessor did, but fans will look forward to the lingering resonance of this touching conclusion in the sequel."
