Forget Words, Guess Lyrics: How Bands Turned Wordle Into Fan Territory

Today's Wordle #1869 answer is SLUSH, but the real story is Rivers Cuomo turning the format into Weezle, a Weezer lyrics-guessing game. Taylor Swift fans have their own spin too, called Taylordle.

Forget Words, Guess Lyrics: How Bands Turned Wordle Into Fan Territory

Rivers Cuomo probably never imagined he'd end up building his own word game. The Weezer frontman's creation, Weezle, plays exactly like Wordle — except instead of guessing a random word, you're guessing a Weezer lyric. For diehard fans, that's a lot more meaningful than cracking a five-letter word; it's basically a daily check-in on how well you know the band.

He's not the only one doing this. Taylor Swift's fanbase has its own version called Taylordle, which lifts the Wordle format wholesale and swaps in her lyrics. Put both examples side by side and they point to the same thing: Wordle's simple "six guesses to crack it" framework has been repurposed by fandoms as a vessel for loyalty. Getting the answer right is, in its own way, proof you're a real fan.

Back to the original game. Today (August 1) marks Wordle #1869, and the answer is SLUSH — a word that works as both noun and verb, describing that half-melted, wet, slippery snow. The hint: starts with S, contains only one vowel, and has one repeated letter. Yesterday's (July 31) answer was PURSE. If you're looking for a solid opener, mathematician Jonathan Olson has recommended vowel-heavy words like Salet, Rance, Alter, and Crate as strong first guesses to help set up early clues.

Recent answers: PURSE, FLUME, VALVE, SONAR, POSER, GRAPE, ALOHA. Wordle is currently free to play on both desktop and mobile.
