Whether it's ceramics, furniture, or exhibition spaces, Teruhiro Yanagihara has always been working through the same idea: negative space. For his first lighting design, he's kept to that same formal language — a single line. Numbra, his new series for &Tradition, centers on the TY1, a 122-centimeter pendant lamp where oak and aluminum come together to form an almost unadorned horizontal form.
The TY1 pairs solid oak panels with a tumble-finished aluminum lamp housing, concealing an acrylic diffuser and stainless steel light core within. The light source is a 15W LED delivering 700 lumens at a warm 2400K color temperature — specs geared not toward stage-level brightness, but toward that quiet, softly shadowed floating band of light you'd want hovering over a dining table or living room. The oak is FSC-certified, finished with a water-based coating, and the entire fixture is designed to be disassembled for repair and recycling. For a piece so focused on elemental simplicity, this honest approach to disassembly might be worth noting even more than the form itself.
