Aston Martin Valen Debuts: The 838-HP V12 That Turns Vanquish Into the Hero's Foil

Built on the Vanquish and limited to 150 units, the Valen was unveiled at Monterey Car Week, with its own design team framing it as an "antihero." This marks one of the rare occasions Aston Martin has openly admitted to playing the villain.

The mood board on the design studio wall reads like this: Ruthless, Ominous, Experimental, Alter Ego, Antihero. If the Vanquish is the suave secret agent who announces his name the moment he walks into a scene—yes, that guy—then this time Aston Martin set out to build his nemesis, the one lurking in the shadows. That's not my characterization; it's what design director Marek Reichmann himself said, describing it in terms of "attacking stance" and "extreme emotions."

The Valen made its official debut at Monterey Car Week, its name drawn from the Latin word for "strong." Built on the chassis of the Vanquish—which just claimed Robb Report's 2026 Car of the Year—it packs a 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 rated at 838 horsepower, which Aston Martin claims makes it the most powerful front-engine production car currently on the market. Alex Long, head of the SVO division responsible for low-volume bespoke models, said that compared to the previous two efforts, Valour and Valiant, the Valen "sits at the edge of what Aston Martin is capable of." Just 150 units will be built worldwide, with pricing starting around $1.7 million before tax, and first deliveries expected in early 2027.

Worth noting for comparison: the Valour and Valiant drew their design language from the past—particularly the rugged 1977 V8 Vantage—while the Valen looks entirely forward instead. The narrow, elongated LED headlights sit tucked beneath a raised "brow line" that extends along the side of the car, stretching Aston Martin's signature side strake into a vent that draws air from the front wheel arches. New side rear windows give the silhouette a distinct departure from the Vanquish, while the jagged air-directing fins carved into the side skirts borrow language from the Valhalla supercar. The car shown at Monterey wore a new satin-finish bespoke color called Andromeda Red, a blend of scarlet, burgundy, copper and gold that shifts under different light. The body pairs an aluminum structure with a carbon-fiber shell, available exposed or painted, riding on 21-inch magnesium wheels wrapped in a bespoke soft-compound Pirelli P Zero R tire developed specifically for this car, built with integrated Cyber Tire data feedback technology.

The most dramatic angle is arguably what this car looks like after it's passed you—there's no rear window at all, with reversing handled entirely via cameras; a light bar spanning the tail doubles as a downforce-generating Gurney flap; the special-compound Pirelli tires are just visible through the angled cut of the carbon-fiber wing; and the exhaust consists of two high-mounted tailpipes, plus two additional pipes hidden within the upswept rear diffuser that only open under high-throttle loads. "The subjective sense of the exhaust note is roughly 50 percent louder than the Vanquish," Long said. "That roar when you lift off the throttle is absolutely dramatic."

Chassis Tuning: Trading Some Comfort for Sharper Agility

The V12 is packed tightly against the firewall, giving a 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution, with power sent to the rear wheels via a carbon-fiber driveshaft and an electronic limited-slip differential. The eight-speed ZF automatic transmission carries over, but with shift logic validated through Aston Martin's Vantage GT4 racing program, offering drivers a choice between Sport, Sport+, and Track modes—the Vanquish's comfort-oriented GT mode has been dropped entirely. Interestingly, Track mode is actually tuned to feel more composed with more linear throttle response, designed for better control at the limit. Aston Martin has yet to release official weight figures, but the car is estimated to be up to 243 pounds lighter than the standard Vanquish, coming in at roughly 3,675 pounds with fluids. Bilstein DTX semi-active dampers are paired with new springs and helper springs, the rear subframe has been rigidly mounted, and the steering has been retuned—Aston Martin says the goal was to make "the Valen drive like a shorter, lighter car." The carbon-ceramic brakes gain a booster for more consistent pedal feel. Long himself admits: "We sacrificed some ride comfort in exchange for greater agility." On paper, that translates to a 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds, an electronically limited top speed of 214 mph, and a peak torque of 738 lb-ft that arrives as early as 2,500 rpm.

A Cabin Pared Down to "Celebrate Negative Space"

The interior retains a GT-oriented layout with two seats and a luggage compartment behind them, plus 6 cubic feet of trunk space—Long put it plainly: "Customers want to be able to take this car on a road trip." Interior design chief Adam McKerron described the team's goal as "celebrating negative space," with the center console noticeably slimmer than the Vanquish's. It makes extensive use of a 3D-printed metal called Scalmalloy, borrowed from the aerospace industry and touted for combining the lightness of aluminum with the strength of titanium—the structure itself looks like a piece of sculpture. Folding the climate controls into the touchscreen and eliminating physical buttons is one of the few decisions here that might give buyers pause. On the customization front, both the factory and retail locations like Q New York offer dedicated offline configuration systems. Seats can be specced in either the Valen-exclusive Sports Plus style or lightweight carbon-fiber bucket seats, trimmed in leather or Alcantara, with the option of a contrast-color driver's seat. Opting for the lightweight package swaps the suspension arms and steering knuckles for machined solid aluminum, with titanium bolts throughout, shaving off an additional 37 pounds.

Long offered some context: the Valhalla introduced Aston Martin to a younger, more performance-obsessed buyer—one who asks "what's technically different here" rather than simply being satisfied by handcrafted bodywork. The Valen seems clearly aimed at exactly that crowd—positioned between the Valhalla and the Vanquish, offering a somewhat subversive answer to the question of what Aston Martin can be. It may be cast as the villain, but in this particular story, everyone seems to be rooting for the bad guy to win.
