Beach Boys Abruptly Pull Plug on Several Pet Sounds 60 Tour Stops Amid Mike Love Health Concerns

The Beach Boys were supposed to get back on stage today (September 24) — but the lights never even came up. The band pulled the plug on two shows each in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, plus two more in South Carolina, without offering any explanation.

The "Pet Sounds 60" tour has been rocky from the start. Back in July of last year, the band already pushed these September dates, citing the need to give Mike Love — the sole surviving founding member — time to "recharge." Now that the dates have finally arrived, they've been scrapped outright, meaning that "recharge plan" has fallen through yet again.

The venues hosting the shows have offered some explanation. Both Univest Performance Center in Quakertown and Alabama Theatre in North Myrtle Beach cited "circumstances beyond our control" as the reason for the cancellations, without going into further detail. NME has reached out to the Beach Boys' management team but has yet to receive a response.

Concerns about Love's vocal condition have persisted throughout the tour. After a May 30 performance, a Slate review described his voice as "reduced to a whisper, garbled and strange, nearly unintelligible." Just days after the review was published, the Beach Boys canceled a string of dates, citing an unspecified illness affecting Love.

Love is now the band's only remaining original member. Bruce Johnston stepped away earlier this year, and the group's iconic frontman Brian Wilson passed away last June at age 82. In its obituary, NME described Wilson as "a culture-defining innovator who represented an awakening in pop music," leaving behind "a legacy of pop symphonies."

The band was originally scheduled to resume the tour on October 9 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois. Whether that show will proceed as planned remains unclear at this time.
