Strip Away the Aero Kit, and Bugatti's Destrier Turns the Bolide's Bones Into Sculpture

The same chassis can grow into a track monster, or it can grow into pure sculpture. This time, Bugatti built the latter for a single buyer.

Destrier is the third one-off from Bugatti's Programme Solitaire division, following last August's Brouillard and the F.K.P. Hommage earlier this year. It borrows the Bolide's chassis and that quad-turbocharged W16 engine, keeping the full 1,578 horsepower intact—but stripping away the entire aero package the Bolide wears for track downforce.

Bugatti itself draws the comparison back to the 1930s: the same Type 57 chassis once gave rise to two extremes—the Type 57C "Tank," built purely for racing and winner of the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Type 57SC Atlantic, widely regarded as a design icon that answered only to form, not function. The design team frames the relationship between Destrier and Bolide as an echo of that family history. Design director Frank Heyl says the Bolide gave them "the most extreme proportions in the marque's history," and freeing those proportions from the constraints of downforce lets them "speak in pure sculptural terms." He even predicts Destrier will be sitting on the lawn at a concours d'elegance fifty years from now—a designer's personal bet, and only time will tell if he's right.

The name Destrier comes from the strongest breed of medieval knight's warhorse, and that imagery is baked into the car's flanks. Muscular lines stack up along the body sides with tension reminiscent of a horse's haunches, finished in a bespoke Sapphire Celeste blue that catches light with the damp sheen of a horse's coat after a gallop. Bugatti's signature C-line and horseshoe grille remain, though the grille opening is wider than on the Bolide. Standing at roughly 3 feet tall, it's officially "lower than any Bugatti before it," riding on 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels—up a size from the Bolide's 18-inchers. The chrome trim in the engine bay gets a deliberate hammered finish, echoing the hand-forged texture of medieval armor—a detail that carries through into the cabin as well.

Two leathers feature inside, anchored by a brown hue called "Ambre Voyageur," paired with what Bugatti calls an "advanced 3D-knit material" woven through with copper thread. Sabine Consolini, who oversaw color and trim, put it plainly in the press release: "Nothing here is meant to shout. Every surface has been measured, considered for touch, and made for one person alone." That line more or less sums up the whole reason Programme Solitaire exists—not to launch a new model, but to push bespoke craftsmanship to its limit for a single client. Destrier will debut on August 14 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, followed by an appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 16—timed just ahead of Monterey Car Week in Northern California. Bugatti chose to reveal it online first, effectively cutting the suspense short. Pricing and delivery status were not disclosed.
