In Chaumet's New Collection, Coffee Is Blue: How 46 Pieces of Jewelry Translate Scent

A Journey through Nature's new 46-piece collection unfolds in three chapters interpreting botanical scents. The detail that lingers isn't the floral or leaf shapes, but Coffee Aroma's choice to swap out coffee-brown for sapphire, and Vanilla Flower's clever main diamond that detaches into a ring.

Coffee shouldn't be blue, but Chaumet went and did it anyway. In the brand-new A Journey through Nature high jewelry collection, the Coffee Aroma necklace centers on a 12.09-carat oval sapphire from Madagascar, paired with a matching ring set with an 8.79-carat sapphire — swapping the house's signature French blue for the brown most people associate with coffee beans. This isn't realism; it's translation. Turning an olfactory memory into visual logic is harder than simply copying a color, and far more interesting.

The preview event was held in a natural early-autumn setting, inspired by the private botanical garden Empress Joséphine once cultivated at Château de Malmaison. Continuing the house's long tradition as a "naturalist jeweler," Chaumet has organized the 46 new pieces into three chapters based on olfactory impressions: fresh herbal notes (Mint Leaf, Tea Field, Verbena Bouquet), sweet spice (Star Anise, Vanilla Flower, Cinnamon Bark), and warm aromatics (Coffee Aroma, Peppercorns, Saffron Flower). The categories may read like a perfumer's notes, but what actually gets built is a structural problem in platinum, gold, and diamonds.

A 10.71-Carat Diamond You Can Take Off and Still Wear

The most labor-intensive piece in the collection is the Vanilla Flower necklace, which took over 1,350 hours to complete. One side of the necklace features flower petals in gold and yellow diamonds, while the other carries a slender vanilla pod set in platinum and diamonds — a deliberate contrast in tone. At the center sits a 10.71-carat D-FL, Type II-A top-grade diamond, with swirling lines tapering into a tassel that sways as the wearer moves. But the real design achievement lies in the detachable mechanism: remove the main stone and the necklace transforms into a sleek, tie-style silhouette, while the detached diamond can be worn on its own as a ring. Chaumet says this marks the house's first time converting a necklace's centerpiece stone into a multi-way ring — and that, more than the romance of the petals, is the true technical feat.

The five pieces in Coffee Aroma likewise took over 1,200 hours to make, with diamonds and sapphires set along nearly invisible metal threads to evoke the warm rise of coffee steam. The tassel beneath the necklace can be detached into a shorter version, and part of the long earrings' drop can also be removed for a more everyday look. The Peppercorns set takes a different approach: platinum and diamonds of varying sizes (0.30 to 1 carat, brilliant cut) mimic the natural scatter of peppercorns, paired with the house's signature blade craftsmanship and the V-shaped feather lines of the Joséphine collection. The necklace can transform from a striking long version into a shorter chain, with the pendant convertible into a brooch or collar accent.

Several of the new rings feature an "adjustable band" for the first time, with a hidden spring mechanism inside the ring's shank that allows the size to shift between three settings — a detail you'd never spot in a glossy photo, but one that determines whether these pieces actually get worn out in the world, rather than sitting in a safe as display pieces. Pricing and retail availability for the collection have not yet been announced.
