Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Opens December 11: Five Year-End Escape Ideas

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi officially opens on December 11, marking the completion of the late Canadian architect Frank Gehry's final major work — a waterfront structure built from stacked boxes and cones. That firm date gives December a concrete reason for a getaway: book the flight before the New Year's crowds pour in. The same month, San Francisco has a reopened century-old hotel, Seville's daytime temperatures sit at a pleasant 16-17°C, Queenstown is in the thick of a Southern Hemisphere summer, and Oulu is bidding farewell to its final year as a European Capital of Culture with a sauna culture send-off.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi sits on the waterfront of Saadiyat Island's cultural district, alongside the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum, both opening in late 2025, and the already-established Louvre Abu Dhabi. The same district is also home to the multisensory art experience teamLab Phenomena and the interfaith architectural complex Abrahamic Family House. Next up is Saadiyat Grove — official materials indicate this new residential-retail project is slated for completion by the end of 2026, bringing over 85 fashion and beauty stores, 40 dining establishments, and roughly 645,000 square feet of retail and leisure space. It's about a 30-minute taxi ride from Zayed International Airport to the museum district on Saadiyat Island; Etihad Airways offers stopover packages that include two nights at a city hotel.

A Culinary Getaway to San Francisco and Seville

San Francisco's Ferry Building has become the city's liveliest dining district in recent years. The newly opened Arquet comes from the Michelin-recognized team behind Sorrel, spotlighting seasonal ingredients from the neighboring Ferry Building farmers market; Hayati is a Mediterranean restaurant from Paris-born restaurateur Kaïs Bouzidi, whose local spots Sens and Barcha are already regulars' favorites. For nightlife, jazz club The Deluxe completed a rebuild this past June with an upgraded sound system — espresso martinis and greyhounds still flow nightly alongside live performances. San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker runs December 4 through 27, and a free fireworks show lights up midnight on New Year's Eve, launched from barges near the Ferry Building and Pier 14. For a place to stay, there's The Huntington Hotel on Nob Hill, a landmark property that closed during the pandemic and reopened this past March.

Across the Atlantic, Seville's December daytime temperatures typically hover between 16 and 17°C — perfect for making up for all the meals missed during a busy European summer. Cañabota, Jaylu, Casa Ruperto, and Yebra are trusted restaurant picks, while Naked and Famous, Plácido y Grata, and Tremenda Muela handle the cocktails. On the hotel front, the city is riding a wave of openings — La Casa del Limonero opened this past April inside a converted 15th-century palace, followed by Cristine Bedfor in September, which made Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List this year. Serras Sevilla and Thompson Seville are next in line, and Four Seasons is slated to move into the Generali building on Plaza Nueva by 2028. The high-speed train from Madrid to Seville takes just two and a half hours, and direct flight routes keep growing, with new connections from Miami, Beijing, Düsseldorf, Baden-Baden, Copenhagen, Basel, and Istanbul.

Queenstown and Oulu: A Summer and a Sauna

With fewer than 30,000 residents, Queenstown punches well above its weight as the Southern Hemisphere's outdoor adventure capital. Last year, the Soho Basin expansion added half a square mile of advanced terrain to Cardrona Alpine Resort; Skyline Queenstown, the tourist complex atop Bob's Peak, unveiled an NZ$58 million expansion this past March, adding dining space and a viewing platform overlooking Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. The Kawarau Gorge cycling trail, connecting Gibbston Valley's wineries to Cromwell, is set to open in October 2026. On the accommodation side, the 15-suite Roki Collection opened last September on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and made Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List; the former Nugget Point Hotel was reborn this past March as the 41-room Coronet Ridge Resort; QT Queenstown is gradually merging with neighboring Rydges Lakeside Queenstown, with construction expected to wrap by mid-2027; and the 20-villa Waimarino Luxury Lodge won't be bookable until late 2026. December in Queenstown means Southern Hemisphere summer — pack the swimsuit.

Oulu, Finland offers the exact opposite temperature. As one of 2026's two European Capitals of Culture (the other being Trenčín, Slovakia), December marks the final month of that title. Oulu Museum of Art has two exhibitions this month exploring "cultural climate change": Adaptation – Time Is Not On Our Side, which asks how humans and nature adapt to one another, and Out of Time, which examines how present reality gets stacked from parallel, overlapping, and even artificial events. The permanent art trail Climate Clock, launched this past June, scatters contemporary artworks through Oulu's forests, rivers, and coastline; the multidisciplinary art installation Peace Machine uses AI to brainstorm conflict solutions; and the science museum Tiima is slated to open in October. When it's time to warm up, there's no shortage of saunas — wood-fired, floating on the river, or done up in full luxury style. Oulu sits at the edge of the Arctic Circle, reachable via Lufthansa's Discover Airlines through Frankfurt or Finnair through Helsinki — so pack a coat that can actually handle the cold.
