With lead single "Accelerando" out now, Grimes says her upcoming album "Psyopera" steers clear of her ex Elon Musk entirely, exploring artificial intelligence and biblical themes instead.

Grimes Confirms No Elon Musk Songs on 'Psyopera,' Pivots to AI and Eden Imagery

Grimes announced the news of her new album with an eerie short film posted on social media. The clip opens with the text "Please wait patiently for the failure of the system," followed by her narration saying "Welcome to the game," touching on imagery of God, the Garden of Eden, and artificial intelligence. This marks her first new album since 2020's "Miss Anthropocene," titled "Psyopera."

The lead single "Accelerando" has already dropped, co-produced by Grimes and VADAKIN. The track carries a dark tone with intense rave rhythms, which she describes as capturing the raw, high-tension energy of the whole album.

While the album's core theme revolves around artificial intelligence, Grimes emphasized that she didn't actually use AI to write the songs. When asked in an interview on the Swiftologist podcast whether the album was inspired by her relationship with Elon Musk, she said flatly: "I just didn't want this to become about Elon." Grimes and Musk share three children, and the two announced their split in September 2021, stating at the time that they still "love each other."

She also revealed that "Psyopera" might be split into two parts, with the second part being "100% personal," hinting that the more emotional, confessional writing would be saved for that separate chapter rather than serving as the focus of this album.

On the topic of AI, Grimes said she believes it's "extremely relevant to life right now," while also admitting she wants "more emotion on one side and less of a computer feel on the other." Earlier this year, she criticized record labels for "all investing in AI now" and using the technology to "literally clone artists' IP." Back in 2024, she also said AI's use in music "will probably shape how everyone thinks going forward." Boucher herself and CreateSafe previously partnered with Slipstream to release over 200 AI-generated Grimes songs for content creators to use.

This past summer, Grimes made a surprise appearance at Coachella 2026. Before that, she also released a song titled "Artificial Angels," written from the perspective of artificial intelligence. After dropping the music video for the track, she mentioned on social media that her newly tattooed face art "went completely unnoticed."

"Psyopera" has yet to receive an official release date, but it's confirmed to be the first Grimes album released through her own label, Nazgul Recording LLC.
