AI Genesis Reimagined: Grimes Unveils *Psyopera* Trailer Rewriting the Gospel of John's Opening

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God." Grimes has rewritten this famous opening line from the Gospel of John into: "On the first day, God created the large language model."

On Wednesday, October 8, the Canadian musician released a trailer for her new album *Psyopera*, titled *Eve Is Online...*. It opens with a line of text that looks ripped straight from a 1980s video game: "Please be patient as the system fails." What follows is a dazed, futuristic montage — towering alien baby statues, grainy mid-20th-century war footage, and interstellar battleships clashing, all layered on top of each other. It's the most concrete visual clue the public has gotten about the album so far.

Throughout the clip, Grimes cycles through multiple looks — alien creature, angel, party girl — before closing the video dressed as an elf warrior, the footage styled like a livestream with likes and comments scrolling across her body in real time. A voiceover modeled after the opening of the Gospel of John runs through the whole thing, but it's been rewritten into a narrative about the rise of AI:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. Man made god in his own image, and god embraced the nature of man. Eden was forged in metal, and artificial light rivaled the sun. God said, 'Conquer the heavens.' On the first day, God created the large language model. And the Word was..."

From Stepping Away From Music to Speaking Up Again

In an April interview with *Interview* magazine, Grimes revealed that she had stepped away from music entirely a few years ago. "I went through it all — public life, private life, raising kids," she said, referencing the turbulence in her relationship with Elon Musk — the two share three children — as well as her long-running tension with public scrutiny. "I was like, 'I'll just be a full-time mom. I don't need any of this.'"

It was a gig writing rap lyrics for a K-pop artist that reignited her creative spark, prompting her to "write a few pop songs" while continuing the spoken-word project she'd already been working on.

While she remains deeply interested in AI technology and its impact on humanity, Grimes clarified in the interview that she "doesn't use AI in the music-making process" — only in the visuals. Her stance on AI, though, is unambiguous: "We need to support companies like Anthropic. We need to understand what's happening and how dangerous this is," she said. "For six years people have been telling me to shut up about AI, and I kept saying we're headed for a military catastrophe — is anyone listening? I'm not trying to sound dramatic, but this is one of the most dangerous things in human history, bigger than the arrival of Jesus — on the same scale as monotheism sweeping across the Western world, maybe even more seismic."

The album's tracklist and release date have yet to be announced.
