An immigrant mother who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, and a fictional woman from the streets of Liberty City — these two figures merged under Alexa D'Agostino's pen into Lucia Caminos, one of the two protagonists of Grand Theft Auto 6.
In an interview with Love Magazine (reposted by Insider Gaming), D'Agostino said that when writing Lucia, she drew on women she personally knew. "My mother is an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, not far from Lucia's hometown of Liberty City. I thought about how she raised me: rough around the edges, kind-hearted, but never one to get walked over. I share a lot in common with Lucia, so writing her felt natural." She added that women like Lucia aren't rare at all — "just like there are plenty of guys like Jason out there — we just focused on capturing that kind of person."
According to the official character bio, Lucia was taught to fight by her father from the moment she could walk, and her life has "been a fight ever since." She landed in prison at Leonida Penitentiary for protecting her family, and only got out through sheer luck. She's the first fully voiced female protagonist in GTA series history.
