GU Reclaims Manchester's Legacy: Francesco Risso's Debut Collection Teams Up with Factory Records

For his first collection as GU's creative director, Francesco Risso's 2026 fall/winter lineup partners with the legendary British label Factory Records, which shut its doors in 1997, bringing the visual DNA of Joy Division and New Order to T-shirts and zip-up jackets.

Factory Records was never a label chasing commercial success. When it launched in 1978, it started out as little more than a Manchester pub hosting shows for indie bands, before eventually evolving into a record label that signed Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio, The Durutti Column, and Happy Mondays. The label ceased operations in 1997 — earlier than many listeners today were even born. That GU chose this label, gone for nearly three decades, as the partner for Francesco Risso's first collection as creative director for GU's 2026 fall/winter season, is a choice worth unpacking on its own.

Rather than chasing a buzzy collaborator for hype, Risso opted for a piece of music history that no one can commercialize anymore. The collaborative pieces include T-shirts and zip-up jackets, with designs drawn directly from the cover art of Factory Records' first EP, "Fac-2: A Factory Sample." Released in 1978, this compilation featured Joy Division's early work and marked the starting point of the label's aesthetic.

The hoodie draws from the design language of that cover art, using waffle-knit fabric in contrasting colorways for a color-blocked effect, with a New York division-style graphic symbol printed on the chest. The printed T-shirts similarly pull imagery straight from the "A Factory Sample" cover. Every piece is designed to be worn on its own, rather than as a collab that only works as a full head-to-toe look.

For fans well-versed in Joy Division or New Order, the appeal of this collaboration isn't about "limited quantities" or "hype" — it's that GU is using its affordable, fast-fashion reach to bring a visual legacy, one that has mostly lived on in vinyl sleeves and documentaries, back into everyday wardrobes. Pricing and the exact release date have not yet been announced; keep an eye on GU's official channels for details.
