Jil Sander Reworks Two Thonet Classics — Less Stitching, More Presence

The JS . THONET collection adds two new pieces — the S 411 Lounge Chair and S 1070 Table, tracing back to prototypes from 1932 and 2004 respectively. This time, Jil Sander's approach is all about subtraction.

Jil Sander didn't redesign the chair — she simply removed a few lines of stitching. The S 411 Lounge Chair traces back to a classic Thonet design from 1932, and the structure itself remains untouched. What Jil Sander did was re-upholster the leather while deliberately reducing the number of seams. Without those dividing lines, the chair's original sculptural silhouette comes through more clearly than ever — a kind of subtraction that only makes sense once you truly understand the original piece.

The other piece, the S 1070 Table, has an even older lineage. It's based on Glen Oliver Löw's 2004 design, which itself traces back further to the table logic of the Bauhaus era. The bent steel tube structure remains fully intact — Jil Sander's only intervention was a surface treatment on the metal, giving a once utterly minimal table a subtly noticeable presence.

This marks the second round of releases from JS . THONET, Jil Sander's ongoing collaboration with Thonet. Neither piece is an entirely new design — instead, both are reinterpretations of prototypes spanning nearly a century within the Thonet family's own archive. Rather than simply stamping her name on furniture, Jil Sander seems to be finding room for one more layer of refinement within objects that were already complete.
