A film pulling in $872 million at the global box office, only for its director to walk away from the sequel — that alone is worth pausing on, no marketing spin needed. Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have confirmed that Gareth Edwards, who directed Jurassic World Rebirth, will not be returning for the next installment. The official reason cited is creative differences between the two parties. Edwards will now shift his focus back to his own original film projects currently in development.
Universal's statement was diplomatic enough: "We had a wonderful experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth." That line on its own doesn't say much, but paired with the phrase "creative differences," it's clear enough that this wasn't a mutual, amicable planning decision — something along the way just didn't line up. The studio has already begun an official search for a new director.
Notably, it's only the director who's stepping away — the cast lineup appears untouched. Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, the three leads, are all expected to return for the sequel. David Koepp, who wrote the previous installment, has also finished the latest script. Filming is slated to begin in 2027, though the official title, plot details, and release date have yet to be announced.
Zooming out, the Jurassic franchise has never really relied on a fixed lineup to hold it together. Across seven films, both directors and lead casts have rotated multiple times — the one constant has always been Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall anchoring things from the producer's chair. In that sense, Edwards' exit is just another turn of that revolving door. What makes it notable this time is that it comes right after a film that cracked open a new chapter for the franchise and delivered solid numbers to boot — roughly $340 million in North America, $872 million globally. Box office success and staying on board have never been the same thing. What the studio is looking for next is someone who can align creatively with where they want to take the sequel.
