A production car built as a tribute to a race car, yet packing more horsepower than the championship-winning car itself—that's the most intriguing part of Land Rover's newly unveiled Defender Dakar. This street-legal machine, built around a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 635 horsepower, leaves its inspiration far behind: the D7X-R, which won its class at this year's Dakar Rally but was limited to under 400 horsepower due to competition regulations.

The Defender Dakar rides on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires, with a chassis ready to tackle dunes of any terrain. Beyond the built-in Dunes desert mode, there's also a Gravel mode that adjusts driving dynamics for different surfaces, plus a rarer setting—Flight. This mode allows the suspension system to anticipate landing timing when the vehicle becomes airborne, preemptively cushioning the impact to ensure a stable touchdown. For anyone planning to catch air while blasting through the desert, it's a genuinely useful feature—and also a solid party trick to show off.
The exterior bears plenty of racing DNA: reinforced underbody armor, carbon-fiber intakes and hood, a fixed roof paired with auxiliary lighting, exposed rivets, and specially designed fender flares. As for color, the Defender Dakar comes in several options, including a yellow Dakar Sand body paired with a Yanbu Turquoise roof—a nod to the D7X-R race car's livery. The body also features exclusive badging to mark its identity.

Mark Cameron, Managing Director of the Defender brand, spoke about how the car came to be in a statement: "We started by evolving the Defender OCTA into the D7X-R, and then we asked ourselves: could we make this Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R street legal? This vehicle carries not just the spirit of the Defender rally team, but also continues our history of off-road innovation."
