Lionel Richie Jokes, Then Walks It Back: "They're Devout Christians"

During his own tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, Lionel Richie poked fun at Usher and Chris Brown's "R&B Tour," saying "we've never been to prison" — the crowd laughed, and he scrambled to walk it back.

Lionel Richie Jokes, Then Walks It Back: "They're Devout Christians"

The crowd laughed first, and that's when Lionel Richie realized he'd let something slip.

At a recent tour stop with Earth, Wind & Fire, Richie brought up Usher and Chris Brown's ongoing North American co-headlining run, "The R&B Tour," delivering the line with an old-school elder statesman's teasing tone: "Usher and Chris Brown, they're trying to do something new. The Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire, we did that 40 years ago. The only difference is — back then compared to now — we've never been to prison."

Laughter and applause hit at the same time, and Richie seemed to only then register what he'd just said, quickly adding an apology: "Sorry, they're devout Christians." Then he tacked on another line that sounded half like damage control, half like he was still twisting the knife: "Yeah, back then we didn't have Instagram, didn't have TikTok, we could just make up a lie and put it out there. What even is that?" With that last remark, the joke he'd meant to take back ended up landing another jab instead.

The line "we've never been to prison" wasn't pulled out of thin air. Chris Brown was sentenced in 2009 for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna, receiving five years' probation and 180 hours of community service, and in 2014 served 108 days behind bars (out of an original 131-day sentence). After his release, he said he wanted to "get back to the music and the fans," but he's since faced multiple accusations involving violent incidents. Just last month, he pleaded not guilty in a London nightclub case involving allegations that he struck a man's head with a bottle; he was briefly held in custody before posting a £5 million bond to secure conditional bail and continue touring. Last summer, kicking off the UK leg of his tour in Manchester, he even joked about the stint in custody: "Thank you for coming out to support me... and thank you to that prison, it wasn't bad at all." In 2021, he was also investigated by police over an accusation from a woman, though the case was later dropped due to "insufficient evidence." Separately, in 2025 Brown filed a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. over sexual assault allegations raised in a documentary, with his legal team calling the content "riddled with lies and distortions."

As for Usher, who shares the bill, his recent headlines have centered on the up-close, interactive stage segments on "The R&B Tour," where he's warned fans not to come up unless they're ready for that level of intimacy; he's also denied rumors that he'd ever used a stand-in to perform in his place.

Between Richie's joke and his hasty walk-back, what lingers is more interesting than the punchline itself: saying "we've never been to prison" is easy enough, but taking it back cleanly is another matter entirely.
