The Humor of Memphis Furniture: Bringing Color and Geometry into the Room

The exhibition 'Free Form | Memphis-Style Furniture Exhibition,' a collaboration between MODPOLY and 裏ART, was previously held on the second floor of TNUA Mercury Art Bookstore, with the exhibition period having concluded on October 11, 2026. The geometric furniture on display still offers clues for understanding this design language.

The Memphis Group launched its first furniture collection in 1981, with vivid color blocks, offset proportions, and playful silhouettes that challenged conventional notions of what furniture 'should look like.' Pieces such as the Carlton bookshelf and the First Chair allowed function and sculptural quality to meet within a single object.

Bringing this sense of playfulness into daily life doesn't require a full room makeover. Starting with a distinctively shaped lamp, or an object that contrasts with its surroundings, allows one to observe how color shifts the visual weight of a space—and gradually discover proportions one personally enjoys.
