Looking Back at Milan Design Week 2026: Tapestries, Handmade Lighting, and the Memory of Materials

Milan Design Week 2026 has concluded, but it leaves behind several works worth extending into thoughts about the home. In "Gucci Memoria," Gucci used large-scale tapestries to trace the brand's history, turning fabric into narrative; Aesop, through its "Aposē" lighting, explored light and handcraftsmanship.

Aesop's lighting pairs a brass base with hand-blown glass, materials that take on different appearances over time. The appeal of this design lies in the fact that surface and light need not always look exactly the same, allowing traces of use to become part of the object's experience.

Returning to one's own room, it's worth paying renewed attention to how fabric, lampshades, and metal fittings work together to shape atmosphere. Rather than replacing all the furniture at once, try changing a single light fixture or piece of textile first, and see what subtle changes emerge in a familiar space.
