JJ Maybank dies right at the start of Season 5, killed by his own biological father, Chadler Groff (played by J. Anthony Crane), who makes off with the legendary Blue Crown. "Outer Banks" spends its final ten episodes steeped in that heaviness, and this season, the music lays out the sorrow before the dialogue even gets there.
Episode 6 uses Ray Charles' "Drown In My Own Tears," a title that practically annotates the plot itself—it's also the oldest and heaviest track in the season's soundtrack. In contrast, Episode 7's Tame Impala track "Borderline" and Episode 8's Fcukers track "Umpa" pull things back toward the show's signature road-trip, coming-of-age energy. The season's original score was composed by Fil Eisler, who has handled the show's music since Season 1 in 2020.
"Outer Banks" was created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, and premiered on Netflix in 2020. The show follows a group of teenagers on North Carolina's Outer Banks, known as the Pogues, on a treasure-hunting adventure. Netflix confirmed back in November 2024 that Season 5 would be the series' last, stating at the time: "Season 5 will be our final season, and we think it's the best one yet." All five seasons are now streaming on Netflix.
