Panerai's New Luminor Marina Swaps Titanium for Compressed Carbon Fiber, Cutting Weight by 64%

Let's start with the material, because this release isn't really about the dial. The 44mm case on the PAM01707 is built from Carbotech™, a composite made by pressing carbon fiber and PEEK polymer together under extreme heat and pressure. The result is a matte black surface with an irregular, almost marbled texture — and thanks to how the process works, no two case patterns come out exactly alike. Panerai's numbers make the point clearly: 64% lighter than titanium, 80% lighter than steel, with corrosion resistance that's better suited to marine use too.

The dial keeps Panerai's familiar sandwich construction, pairing a matte black base with warm cream Super-LumiNova® that glows green in the dark — classic vintage tool-watch territory for the brand. There's no date window on this one, and that's intentional: it's a nod back to the watches Panerai originally built for the Royal Italian Navy, which were kept clean and free of distractions. At 9 o'clock sits a small seconds subdial, a detail that wasn't decorative back in the day — Italian commandos used it to confirm the watch was actually still running. The case measures 14.5mm thick, the caseback is DLC-coated titanium, and the watch comes with two straps: a warm brown vintage calfskin with cream stitching, and a black rubber strap for underwater wear.

Inside is the in-house P.9010 automatic movement, just 6mm thick, built from 200 components and 31 jewels, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). Twin series-coupled barrels deliver three days of power reserve. Practical touches include hacking seconds for precise time-setting, plus a quick time-zone adjustment mechanism that lets the hour hand jump independently without disturbing the minutes. Water resistance is rated to 30 bar (roughly 300 meters), with a built-in 25% safety margin. The PAM01707 is available now at Panerai's website and boutiques; pricing wasn't disclosed.
