Inside Sex and the City Stylist Patricia Field's New York Apartment, Filled with Souvenirs From a Life on Set

From Moroccan slippers to a Tokyo-exclusive lipstick, the stylist's Lower East Side apartment follows no design logic—just a running inventory of loot collected over six decades on film sets.

There's no shower in the bathroom—just a tub deep enough to soak in, with a TV mounted on the wall. That's the layout Patricia Field settled on for her Lower East Side apartment in New York, inspired by the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, a scene she filed away thirty years ago while working on a job in Japan. In the living room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the East River, looking out toward the Brooklyn and Queens skyline. The curtains are mirrored fabric, shipped straight from Fendi's New York showroom.

Field, the costume designer behind The Devil Wears Prada and the Sex and the City franchise, has spent sixty years in the industry with the same working method: shop while you shoot. Calling this apartment a "decorated" space almost misses the point—it's really a running log of her jobs on the road, where every object corresponds to a production, a city.

During the weeks spent filming Sex and the City 2, she followed the crew through Morocco, Turkey, and Abu Dhabi. At a market in Marrakech, she picked up several pairs of traditional embroidered slippers she still wears around the house today. At the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, she selected a colorful glass chandelier, which she shipped back to New York to hang above her kitchen counter.

Emily in Paris ran for five seasons, and Field followed along in Paris for five years, always carving out time to duck into local vintage shops. Her closet is stuffed with Pucci, Libertine, Hermès, and Chanel, but the piece she brings up most often is a Christian Dior jacket by John Galliano, bought in Paris in 2002—paired with those Moroccan slippers, what she calls a "perfect match."

Japan's mark on her lives on at the vanity. Shiseido's Beni Kabuki brush lipstick is sold only in Japan, in a single rose-pink shade. Field restocks whenever she visits, and asks friends to bring some back when she can't.

Field is a native New Yorker, but her mother's family is Greek, settling in Athens before immigrating to Manhattan. She considers Greece her second home, spending most of her time in Athens with the occasional trip to Paros and Mykonos. In 2017, on Mykonos's bustling Matogianni Street, she bought an ordinary coffee mug printed with Greek text that translates to "a pound and a half of sardines"—hardly poetic, yet she's kept it ever since.

She also keeps a second home on Miami Beach. The gold palm tree sculpture in her bedroom came from a local consignment shop, Las Tías, purchased a decade ago. The shop has since closed, but the sculpture remains.
