Porsche Scraps Leipzig Relocation Plan, Taycan Reportedly Set to End Production in 2030 at Original Plant

German outlet WirtschaftsWoche reports that Porsche has reached a preliminary agreement with its works council to discontinue the Taycan, scrapping plans to relocate production to Leipzig. Instead, the model will continue being built at the original Zuffenhausen plant until production wraps in 2030.

Porsche Scraps Leipzig Relocation Plan, Taycan Reportedly Set to End Production in 2030 at Original Plant

On one hand, the CEO has publicly denied any short-term plans to discontinue the car. On the other, management has already reached a preliminary agreement with the works council to end production by 2030. Porsche's stance on the Taycan this time feels almost deliberately contradictory.

According to German business outlet WirtschaftsWoche, Porsche had originally planned to move Taycan production from its current Zuffenhausen plant to Leipzig. That relocation plan has now been abandoned internally. The new approach: the Taycan will remain in production at Zuffenhausen until it's fully discontinued in 2030. While the related documentation hasn't been finalized, management and Porsche's works council have already reached a preliminary consensus.

The financial numbers explain the pressure behind this shift. Porsche's operating profit plunged from €5.64 billion to just €413 million over the past year, and Taycan sales fell in step—only 11,510 units sold in 2025, down from 21,302 the year before, nearly cut in half. The real culprit eating into its market share is its sibling model, the Macan EV. Since launching, this electric SUV has perfectly aligned with luxury buyers' recent preference for large SUVs over low-slung performance sedans, pulling away a significant chunk of customers who might otherwise have bought a Taycan.

What's intriguing is that just before the discontinuation rumors surfaced, CEO Michael Leiters had publicly stated Porsche had no plans to cancel the model anytime soon. The brand even invested resources into developing a 2027 refresh, adding a simulated manual-shift feature to appeal to diehard fans who favor a more traditional driving feel. Between the public messaging and the internal understanding lies a six-year buffer—and within that gap, the brand's true feelings about the car.

The Taycan was Porsche's first mass-produced all-electric model, once setting the benchmark for luxury electric performance cars—proving that battery power could deliver the handling feel a sports car demands. But nostalgia has never translated into positive numbers on a balance sheet. If consumer interest keeps cooling and the Leipzig plant's capacity gets absorbed by other bestselling models, this electric coupe that once defined an era may ultimately exit quietly.
