Qualcomm's New Chip Wants Your Earbuds to Really Get What You're Saying

No need to pull out your phone or say a wake word to trigger an assistant interface—just speak while wearing your earbuds and get an instant response. That's the interaction Qualcomm envisions for its next generation of audio devices. The company recently unveiled its Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 chip, targeting earbuds, headphones, audio glasses, and rumored new-form-factor devices like the camera-equipped AirPods reportedly in development at Apple.

Qualcomm says the chip's on-device AI processing power is twice that of its predecessor, the Snapdragon S7 Gen 1 Sound Platform. Ziad Asghar, Senior Vice President and General Manager overseeing XR, wearables, and personal AI, said: "As AI becomes a core capability, users will expect more natural ways of interacting. Not all of these interactions will happen through a screen—they'll happen through natural conversation, where users simply speak and get instant help from an AI assistant."

Asghar further noted that the new chip enables real-time on-device translation, as well as features that amplify sounds and conversations to assist those with hearing difficulties. In other words, this chip isn't just targeting the responsiveness of voice assistants—it's also eyeing the potential for earbuds to function as "hearing aid" tools.

On the hardware side, Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 supports Qualcomm's own aptX Lossless audio technology, along with XPAN wireless audio technology, which combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to extend a device's effective range. The chip also comes with built-in Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, which Qualcomm says delivers faster transmission speeds, enabling "always-available AI" without sacrificing battery life or audio quality.

No specific end products featuring this chip or launch timelines have been announced yet.
