Sheryl Crow's New Album Opens with Protest, But Aims to Soothe Listeners' Hearts

When Sheryl Crow talks about "freedom," she uses words like blood, sweat, and tears. But when she talks about the album as a whole, she says she hopes listeners feel like their "chapped hearts have been soothed with a layer of hand cream." Placing these two statements side by side—and the contrast between them—is exactly what makes this new album so intriguing.

The new album *Pick You Up* is set for release on October 9 via Old Green Barn, featuring seven tracks co-written by Crow and her longtime collaborator Jeff Trott. The lead single "Freedom Bus," featuring Jesse Welles, has been described as a song with protest undertones. In the press release, Crow said of the track: "I don't take our freedom lightly, because it was bought with the lives of countless people throughout history. I hope this is something we all remember as we engage with one another. Our conversations and our disagreements should be worthy of those who paid in blood, sweat, and tears to secure equality and constitutional rights for all of us."

But Crow's framing for the album as a whole isn't a political statement—it's something far more personal. She says the album is about "being human and craving connection," noting that she herself often feels alone amid the chaos around her: "I hope whoever hears these songs feels the same hope I felt while singing them! I want these songs to feel like a soothing hand cream applied to our chapped hearts."

The seven tracks are "Freight Train," "Perfect," "Pick You Up," "Flat Earth," "I've Got Your Number," "Heaven Help Us," and the closing track "Freedom Bus" (feat. Jesse Welles). The title track "Pick You Up" sits in the middle of the album rather than opening or closing it as a prelude or conclusion—and that placement itself feels like a small signal. Crow doesn't seem to be treating the album as a single message, but rather letting the idea of "picking you up" become one stop along the way, not the final destination.

For now, the only confirmed details are the single "Freedom Bus," the tracklist, and the October 9 release date. The album cover and further details have yet to be announced.
